Testing Configurations Flashcards
What is the purpose of Continuity Testing?
A continuity test is one method of establishing the complete and continuous nature of a fibre optic link. Continuity testing is also used to highlights the location and the nature of breaks or faults. In addition, continuity testing also confirms the correct route and location of fibres.
What equipment can be used to check Continuity?
- Torch or Flashlight
- Visible red laser
- Infra-red light source and power meter
- Communications Equipment
- OTDR
What does the abbreviation “VFL” stand for?
Visible Fault Locator.
What is the maximum distance a VFL is effective to?
Up to 4km or 5km
Which item of test equipment is used for Tier 1 testing?
Light Source and Power Meter (LSPM);
Which item of test equipment would be used to measure insertion loss?
Light Source and Power Meter (LSPM);
Define the term “Insertion Loss Measurement”
Put simply, insertion loss is the measurement of light that is lost between two fixed points in the fibre.
What are Known good leads are also known as?
Launch and Tail Leads.
What accessory can be used to provide a steady launch state?
Known good leads.
What item of test equipment would be used for Tier 2 testing?
Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)
What methods are available affording testing on un-terminated optical fibre cabling?
Mechanical Splices
Bare Fibre Adapter
Fusion Splicing
What precautions should be adhered to when using a Light Source and Power Meter?
- Always ensure laser is off when the leads are disconnected
- Clean all connectors prior to insertion into the equipment
- Clean all connectors that are being tested
- Use a mandrel wrap on MM systems where possible
- Once a lead is referenced don’t remove it from the light source.
Which testing configuration should be used when testing an optical fibre system using a LSPM?
• Configuration A: 1 cord reference
these are the other two Configurations;
- Configuration B: 3 cord reference
- Configuration C: 2 cord reference.
When carrying out an Insertion Loss Measurement test, what is the correct setup when using 1 Cord Referencing?
2x Known Good Leads
1 of which should be referenced out
