Testing Concepts- Screening and Communication Flashcards
Does a test need to be reliable to be valid?
YES
What are two components of easy test administration?
How easy is it to
- have a client perform a given test
-for the participant and tester to interact
How feasible is it in terms of
- staff requirements and training needs
-equipment requirements and availability?
-Associated costs
Pros and cons of Lab tests
examples-VO2 max, leg force, DEXA, rodpod
Pros
- controlled environment (temp, barometric, etc)
- higher quality equipment, therefore more precise and accurate
Cons
- Do not reflect performance in the field
-high cost
- takes a lot of time and is individually based
Pros and cons of field tests?
example- vertical jump, skin folds, beep test
Pros - easier to administer -more specific to training Cons - less controlled environment less precision
What are four important test characteristics?
- Does the end justify the means?
- The ability to discriminate against people (not everyone should ace it)
- Practicality and mass testibility (time constraints, lots of people through at once)
- Testing sequence (important to be intentional and consistent)
What are some general testing sequence considerations?
- Screening always comes first
- Then non-fatiguing tests (except for firefighters because of test specificity)
- then max power and strength tests
- ideally max tests are on separate days
What types of scores can be taken for tests of multiple trials? Which one do we tend to take?
- Best score
- Mean score
generally we take best score
What do we rank our scores against?
either
- norm referenced standards or
- criterion referenced standards
What is a criterion reference standard?
A pass/fail score
- has the participant achieved a pre-determined level of performance
examples– firefighter testing, drivers test
What is a norm reference standard?
Rates performance in relation to norms (others)
is more commonly used in health testing as it can provide more meaning for clients (they see where they sit relative to others)
What are some things to consider when selecting norm values?
Type of testing protocol used
Defn & demographic of population being compared to
Are the values published by a reputable source
*ACSM is best researched
Every participant/client should expect the right to:
- fair and equitable treatment
- Privacy, anonymitiy and confidentiality (not always possible in the field, clients should be made aware of who will see their results/how results will be shared & interpreted)
- a safe and positive testing experience
Why do we screen clients?
Professional, ethical and legal reasons
Preliminary instructions for clients should be provided when and helps with what? what should it cover?
- helps w standard.
- 48hr advance
appropriate dress,
avoid: food, caffeine, smoking, 2hrs before
alcohol-avoid 6hrs before
vv strenuous exercise
(if someone doesn’t follow these it will impact the validity)
What components are part of pre test screening?
GAQ Consent form Resting HR BP Observation
