Australian aborigines
Europeans came after; around 90% died; they were discriminated against; the colonisers destroyed food sources and sacred hunting grounds.
The Sepoy rebellion
The English disregarded religious values, they greased weapons with pig fat (Haram) and cow fat (sacred to Hindus); they took control and introduced taxes, laws and an army.
The Irish potato famine
The British Government did nothing to help; around 1 million people died and 1.5 million people emigrated; the British made the Irish suffer alone.
WW1/WW2
After the war, Britain gave independence to some countries after they helped in the war; they gave royal status to the Indian Air Force.
Britain gave to the empire
Britain helped along other countries by introducing them to railways, Christianity, education and democracy (trial by jury)
Ending slavery in Zanzibar
The British ended slavery in Zanzibar; Britain let the country rule how they wanted and gave Arabs lots of opportunities in Zanzibar.
Empire
A group of territories and people ruled over by an Emperor who usually appoints people to help them rule.
Penal Colony
A colony where criminals and undesirables are sent to as punishment.
Resource
A material that is considered valuable for a particular purpose such as construction, consumption or luxury.
Exploitation
When a country unfairly takes advantage of people or resources in order to benefit from it.
Missionary
People whose John it is to spread Christianity to other countries.
Victorian era
The period of time when Queen Victoria ruled (1837-1901) and covers a big part of the British empire and Industrial Revolution.
Aborigine
People who originally lived in Australia and were persecuted by the British settlers.
Sepoy rebellion
Major uprising in 1857 of sepoys against British rule, in part due to rumours about the Lee Enfield Rifle cartridge being dipped in cow and pig fat. Ultimately unsuccessful but ended rule of East India Company.
Scramble for Africa
Period of time in the late 19th century when European countries rushed to conquer as much of Africa as possible.
