Test part 1- Weathering and Soil Flashcards
0
Q
what is mechanical weathering?
A
breaking down of rock by physical forces
1
Q
what is weathering?
A
the constant breaking down of materials on earth
2
Q
what are some examples of mechanical weathering?
A
breaking, crashing, pounding, cracking of rock
3
Q
what type of forces can affect the rate of mechanical weathering
A
- temperature: (heating causes expansion of rocks)
- organic activity: (roots forming and breaking through rock
- frost: (cooling of ice and side of rock will expand and crack the rock, pot holes)
- gravity: (pills on rocks util they move and crash on each other.. landslides)
- abrasion: ( sand moving over the surface of a rock makes it smooth over time)
4
Q
what is chemical weathering?
A
weathering by chemical changes (reactions and change in chemical composition) that will break down or dissolve rock
5
Q
what are some agents of chemical weathering?
A
- water and carbon dioxide: will either dissolve rock or form a acid which will erode the rock
- oxidation: oxygen will react with the rock to form a new molecule
- sulfuric acid: when water combine with sulfur it forms
