Test For Nails Hair And Skin Flashcards
What are the layers of the skin?
Epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis
What is the epidermis?
The most superficial layer of the skin, it is made of stratified squamous epithelium and it has got 5 layers. The outermost layer of the epidermis is constantly shedding and replaced by new cells.
What is the dermis?
The dermis is a highly sensitive and vascular layer that sits underneath and supports the epidermis. It is made of dense connective tissue and contains blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands, oil glands and follicles.
What is the hypodermis?
The deepest layer of the skin, it consists of adipose tissue containing fat cells, muscles and veins.
What are the layers of the epidermis?
Stratum corneum
Stratum lucidum
Stratum granulosum
stratum spinosum
Stratum germinativum
Where and what is occurring during cell division?
Cell division occurs in the stratum germinativum, cells go through rapid mitosis.
Where and what is occurring during keratinisation?
Keratinisation occurs in the stratum granulosum, it is the process of changing live, epidermal cells into hard, flattened keratinized cells.
Where and what is occurring during desquamation?
Desquamation occurs in the stratum corneum, keratinized cells are sloughed off as new cells replace them.
What is the structure and function of melanocytes?
Melanocytes are roughly triangular and have fine branching processes that enables them to transfer melanin into surrounding cells.
What is the function of melanin?
Melanin provides pigmentation to your skin, hair and eyes, it also absorbs harmful UV rays and protects your skin from sun damage.
What are the layers of the dermis?
Superficial papillary layer- brings oxygen and nourishment to the skin. Also detects heat, cold, pain, touch ect
Deep reticular layer-contains a network of protein fibres to give the skin suppleness, contractibility and strength.
What are the function and cells that produce collagen?
