Hydrogen Gas
Place a lighted splint at the mouth of the test tube containing the gas.
The lighted splint would extinguish with a ‘pop’ sound.
Oxygen Gas
Place a glowing splint at the mouth of the test tube containing the gas.
The glowing splint would be rekindled.
Carbon dioxide gas
Bubble the gas into limewater.
A white precipitate would be formed in limewater (ppt. dissolves upon further bubbling).
Ammonia gas
Place a moist red litmus paper at the mouth of the test tube containing the gas.
The moist red litmus paper would turn blue.
Sulfur dioxide
Place a piece of filter paper soaked with acidified potassium manganate (VII) at the mouth of the test tube.
The purple acidified potassium manganate (VII) turns from purple to colorless.
Chlorine
Place a piece of moist red litmus paper at the mouth of the test tube.
The moist blue litmus paper turns red, and is bleached.
