Dawes Plan
The Dawes Plan provided short-term economic benefits to the German economy and softened the burdens of war reparations. By stabilizing the currency, it brought increased foreign investments and loans to the German market. But, it made the German economy dependent on foreign markets and economies.
why did the great depression become a global problem
- There was a great deal of international trade and people in one country would also invest in other countries. Also, the health of the German economy was tied closely to loans from the United States since Germany was still burdened by the reparations it was forced to pay because of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. When the US economy collapsed, then, other countries were affected. As some examples, Germany stopped being able to borrow from the US, British investors lost money on their US investments, and American investment in Mexico slowed dramatically. Thus, these other three countries were harmed by the Depression in the US.
- Second, many countries started to erect trade barriers. In the US, this took the form of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff. These tariffs stifled international trade, which was already hurting because of the drop in demand. The trade barriers threw more people out of work, making the Depression even worse.
what is inflation give an example
Two general theories explain inflation. The first, the demand-pull theory, says that prices increase when demand for goods and services exceeds their supply.
Let’s look at the cost of a one pound loaf of white bread over a twenty-five year period. In January of 1988, the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Statistics, indicates that a loaf of white bread cost approximately 59¢. In January of 2013, that same loaf of bread cost $1.42. Thus, in the twenty-five year period, the bread increased 83¢ or rose by 140%. (Use this site’s Inflation Calculator to find how buying power of the US dollar has changed over the year.)
why was the weimar republic unsuccesfull
The Treaty of Versailles had to be enforced by the Weimar Republic. Some people blamed their government for surrendering to the world powers.
The stability of the middle class was destroyed by inflation, for which many felt the government was responsible.
There were a large number of political parties, so the disenchanted were able to choose one to support.
Hitler received backing from the middle class and anti-Communists, as well as the industrialists.
Germany was devastated by the depression, and the Nazis were an alternative to communism that still offered relief.
what is it and why was german coalition government ineffective
A coalition government is a cabinet of a parliamentary government in which several political parties cooperate, reducing the dominance of any one party within that coalition. The usual reason given for this arrangement is that no party on its own can achieve a majority in the parliament.
Joseph Stalin rise to power
Under Stalin, the Soviet Union was transformed from a peasant society into an industrial and military superpower. In 1912, Lenin, then in exile in Switzerland, appointed Joseph Stalin to serve on the first Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party. Three years later, in November 1917, the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia. The Soviet Union was founded in 1922, with Lenin as its first leader. During these years, Stalin had continued to move up the party ladder, and in 1922 he became secretary general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, a role that enabled him to appoint his allies to government jobs and grow a base of political support. After Lenin died in 1924, Stalin eventually outmaneuvered his rivals and won the power struggle for control of the Communist Party. By the late 1920s, he had become dictator of the Soviet Union.
THE SOVIET UNION UNDER JOSEPH STALIN
Starting in the late 1920s, Joseph Stalin launched a series of five-year plans intended to transform the Soviet Union from a peasant society into an industrial superpower. His development plan was centered on government control of the economy and included the forced collectivization of Soviet agriculture, in which the government took control of farms.
ADOLF HITLER
After World War I, he rose to power in the National Socialist German Workers Party, taking control of the German government in 1933.
