Test Anions And Gases Flashcards
Test for carbonate
Add dilute HCl to the solid (or mi with solution). Bubbles of CO2 gas are given off. If the gas is bubbled into limewater, it turns milky.
CO3^2-(aq) + 2H+(aq) -> CO2(g) + H20(l)
Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(g) -> CaCO3(s) + H20(l)
Test for Chloride
add a few drops of nitric acid and then a few drops of aqueous silver nitrate solution. A white precipitate of silver chloride is formed.
Ag+(aq) + Cl-(aq) -> AgCl(s)
Test for Iodide
add a few drops of nitric acid and then a few drops of a aqueous silver nitrate solution. A pale yellow precipitate of silver iodide is formed.
Ag+(aq) + I-(aq) -> AgI(s)
Test for nitrate
boil with aluminium and sodium hydroxide solution, carefully, and when the pungent smelling ammonia gas (formed by the reduction of the nitrate ion by the aluminium) is tested with damp red litmus paper it turns blue.
Test for sulfate
Add a few drops of nitric acid than a few drops of barium nitrate solution. A white precipitate of barium sulfate is formed.
Ba^2+(aq) + SO4^2-(aq) -> BaSO4(s)
Test for ammonia
Damp red litmus paper is turned blue.
Test for CO2
A gas is produced, which when bubbled in limewater, turns milky.
Test for Chlorine
Damn blue litmus paper is reddend then bleached.
Test for Hydrogen
A lighted splint is brought up the tube. A Pop or squeak denotes hydrogen.
test for oxygen
A glowing splint is relighted
Test for sulfur dioxide
Turns aqueous potassium manganate (VII) from purple to colourless.
