Explain the reasons for hunger strikes

A
  • due to removal of special category status (1976)
  • previous protests didn’t work eg blanket protest
  • hunger strayed been successful republican tactic in past
  • prisoners aimed to increase republican popularity
  • public demonstrations in support of protest had little success
  • republicans viewed themselves as victims of conflict not terrorists
  • 1981 hunger strikes were cause they didn’t get concessions they thought they got after 1980 strikes
  • republicans needed new tactics hunger strikes were a way if attracting sympathy and support for republican cause
  • reliance in armed was not working, British infiltrating USA cells
