Why did many farmers want the government to print more paper money in the decades following the Civil War? Why would this practice actually hurt the economy?
The farmers wanted the gov. to print more money and increase the supply of money in circulation because it would bring inflation, the rapid increase of prices. They believed that inflation would increase the prices they received for their crops and make it easier to pay off their loans. The problem with this practice is that inflation makes it more difficult for everyone, including farmers, to buy the things they need.
How did the philanthropy of men like Andrew Carnegie help all Americans?
He and others like him invested money and effort that created thousands of jobs. They also gave much of their wealth away to needy people & private charities. During his life, Carnegie gave away more than $350 million. He donated 7000 pipe organs to churches and built over 3000 public libraries.
