Explain how Big Reddy eluded the dogs during the fox hunt in “The Secret of Coon Castle”
During the earlier part of the chase, Big Reddy kept ahead of the pack by using a wide variety of tricks, such as running through a maze of trails, running over rocks that held little scent, and running through a herd of cattle. Later in the day, the wily fox mingled his trail with that of another fox, throwing the dogs off his track. Big Reddy finally fooled the dogs completely when he retreated to Coon Castle, the hollow tree that was home to Old Bandit, a large raccoon. The dogs lost the fox because the tree was surrounded by fungus, which extinguishes an animal’s scent.
