antacid side effects
Hypermagnesemia
Minor - Diarrhea, constipation, stomach cramps, flatulence (gas)
Antacid: Treats GERD, reduce gastric acid secretion
bismuth mechanism with H-Pylori
Prevents H-Pylori from adhering to gastric mucosa
Inhibits bacterial growth
—peptobismal
GERD treatment goals
Primary goal is to reduce gastric acid secretion
misoprostol side effects
May cause abortion in pregnancy
PPI teaching
Take 30 min before eating, usually before breakfast
May be administered same time as Antacids
PUD risk factors
- Close family history of PUD
- Blood group O
- Smoking tobacco
- Caffeine
- Drugs (corticosteroids, NSAIDs, platelet inhibitors)
- Excessive psychological stress
- Infection with Helicobacter pylori (#1 cause)
Ranitidine teaching
- If using OTC drugs, client should seek medical attention if symptoms persist or reoccur
- Decreases levels of cyanocobalamin
- Monitor bone density with long-term use
Sucralfate administration
Must be taken on an empty stomach
Bismuth subsalicylate mechanism of action
binds and absorbs toxins
Diphenoxylate with atropine mechanism of action
slows peristalsis and allows time for water reabsorption from colon (more solid stools)
orlistat side effects
Flatus with discharge
Oily stool
Fecal urgency
Abdominal pain
Pancrelipase teaching
Check for pork allergy
Powder formulation sprinkled on food
Do not crush enteric coated tabs
Give 1-2 hours before meals or with meals
Prochlorperazine side effects
- Dry mouth, sedation, constipation
- Orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia
- Extrapyramidal symptoms are serious concern with prolonged therapy
Psyllium mucolloid administration
PO: 1–2 tsp or 2–6 capsules daily in 8 oz water

Stimulant laxative administration
Metamucil mix in a full glass of liquid and then follow with another glass.
Fibercon follow with food to be sure it is not in the esophagus.
GoLytely requires clear liquid diet for 24 to 48 hours prior to taking for colonoscopy prep.
