Test 4 Review Flashcards
Strategic therapy
focuses on the interactional patterns that maintain problematic behavior. Symptoms are regarded as an integral part (i.e., as both a cause and effect) of a repetitive sequence of behavior
humanistic therapy
provides a method of counseling that focuses on an individual’s unique, personal potential to explore deeper understanding of self, even when working with a couple
Projective identification
three steps: an aspect of the self is projected onto someone else; the projector (the father, in this case) tries to coerce the other person (the son) to identify with what has been projected; and the projector and the recipient of the projection feel a sense of oneness or union
What are three significant forms of nonverbal communication to assess when working with clients from cultures that differ from one’s own?
Sue and Sue (2003). These authors stress the importance of assessing: 1) proxemics (interpersonal space), 2) kinesics (bodily movements, such as facial expression, posture, gestures, and eye contact), and 3) paralanguage (vocal cues, such as loudness of voice, pauses, inflections, etc.
task-centered model
short-term problem-solving approach that focuses on problems that are explicitly acknowledged by the client. An emphasis is placed on the clients input in developing intervention strategies, not only to develop more effective interventions, but also to promote the client’s own problem-solving abilities. Change is brought about primarily through problem-solving actions, or tasks, carried out by the client between sessions. During sessions, the social worker and the client review problems and tasks, identify and resolve potential obstacles to task accomplishment, plan how the client will implement the tasks, and establish incentives and rationale for the tasks. The social worker may also model task behavior or ask the client to rehearse what he or she is going to do or say, and provide the client with suggestions, coaching, and feedback. Modeling and rehearsal are often achieved using role-playing and/or guided practice.
Gestalt therapy
focuses on contact, awareness, and experimentation, and uses intervention techniques such as the empty-chair, dream analysis, and teaching language
A DSM-5 diagnosis of acute stress disorder requires a duration of symptoms of:
For a diagnosis of acute stress disorder, the DSM-5 requires that symptoms have a duration of three days to one month. It notes that symptoms typically begin immediately after exposure to the trauma but does not require that they do so.
High-context communication
characteristic of African, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Americans. It relies heavily on restricted codes (in which words and sentences are shortened without a loss of meaning), culturally defined meanings, and nonverbal messages. For example, among Filipinos, a hesitant yes is a way of expressing a polite no; and, among African Americans, gestures and body posture often substitute for spoken words.
Low-context communication
characteristic of Anglo-Americans, emphasizes verbal messages and elaborated codes (use of many words to convey a message). In addition, in low-context cultures, self-image and self-worth are defined in personal, individual terms (individualism)
core ethical research principles
1) Obtain informed consent, 2) Minimize harm, 3) Protect confidentiality, 4) Avoid deception and 5) Give participants the right to withdraw from the study
Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder
involves severe, recurrent temper outbursts with a persistent irritable and angry mood between outbursts on most days.
