Intrinsic motivation
Based on internal drives (Hunger, sex, achievement, arousal, belonging, power or significance)
Extrinsic motivation
Based on external incentives or rewards
Money
Drive reduction theory
The idea that psychological need creates an aroused tension state (a drive) that motivates (pushes) an organism to satisfy the need
Homeostasis
Tendency to maintain a balanced a constant internal state
Regulation of any aspect of body chemistry around a particular level
Arousal theory
The idea that we as humans (as do animals) need a certain amount of stimulation:
Curiosity
Adventure
Search for knowledge
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Maslow believed the strongest need on the bottom, and the weakest on the top. Believed the one on the bottom must be met in order to move up. He believed that only about 1% of us will reach the top.
Motivation
And need or desire that energizes and directs behavior
