test 3 meds Flashcards
meds for increased ICP
anti seizure, barbiturates, corticosteroids, H2 blockers, osmotic diuretics
Mannitol
osmotic diuretic that decreases ICP. causes fluid to move from tissue to blood vessels, watch for HA, edema, CHF, electrolytes
hypertonic 3% saline
pulls fluid into the blood because there is lots of Na. monitor BP and sodium levels
corticosteroids
prednisone
controls edema for tumors and abscesses but not for trauma, increases blood flow to decrease ICP
H2 blockers
cimetidine, ranitidine
for ICP
barbiturates
pentobarbital
reduce cerebral metabolism, leading to decrease CBF and ICP. watch brain waves
phenytoin
for seizures and inflamm.
reduce voltage frequency and spread of electrical discharges
manage seizure activity
watch for gingival hyperplasia and bradycardia
carbamazepine
for seizures and stroke
reduces synaptic reaction
watch for visual problems, ataxia and vertigo
phenobarbital
for seizures and inflamm.
works like a circuit breaker in seizure activity
watch for drowsiness and dependence, can cause confusion and restlessness in elderly
antibiotics and virals
collins, cephalosporin, acyclovir
for inflammatory
dexamethasone
for meningitis, reduces inflammation
phenytoin
dilantin
prevents seizures
levodopa with carbidopa
for parkinsons
converted to dopamine in brain
wears off after a few years
sumatriptan
first line abortive for migraine
reduces inflammation in blood vessels and produce constriction
don’t take with heart disease and stroke
topiramate
preventative migraine
anti seizure, takes 2-3 months to determine if effective
se- hypoglycemia, weight loss, cog. changes
