Definition of a consumer
A consumer is a person who buys goods or services for their own use
What are the characteristics of a wise consumer
-Can I afford it
-Do I really need it
-Can I buy this product more cheaply elsewhere
-Is it safe
-Will there be future costs when I buy this
What are the responsibilities of consumers
-to shop around for the best value
-to keep receipts for proof of purchase
-avoid impulse buying and false business

-Goods that are of merchantable quality
-Be fit for intended purpose
-Be as described

Explain the 4 rights of consumers under the sale of goods and supply of services Act 1980
-goods are of merchantable quality
They must be in fit condition and safe to sell. Eg. A washing machine
-be fit for the intended purpose
They must do what they say they do on the label. Eg. A kettle must boil water
-be as described
They must match the description on the label/packet of the item. Eg a jacket described as waterproof must not let rain in

The item must look like as shown. Eg. Tiles must look like how they did in the shop

Explain the 3 Rs
Repair: the item may be fixed free of charge
Replacement: you can get the same thing or an alternative product that is free of charge and damage
Refund: You can receive the cost of the item back either in cash or a good
What is a sweatshop
A sweatshop is a factory or workplace where workers are employed at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions. They are most often found in the clothing industry.
What is an ethical consumer
Ethical consumers only buy products that are produced in a fair and honest way.
They avoid products that are known to harm or exploit other people or the natural environment.
