Test 2- Swine Flashcards
Are pigs amiable for restraint?
NO! and they are difficult to grab; can use snare
Are alpha-2s widely used in swine meds?
NO! pigs are resistant to alpha 2s
IM injections
have to use needles at least 2-3 in long needles to avoid injections in fat- BEST place= behind ear and neck and never in the hind end
SQ injection site
skin fold of rear leg
Venous puncture
cranial vena cava, cephalic vein, ear vein
Do you fast pigs?
yes; fast for 12-24 hours; without fasting produces gas accumulation producing distension,
Azaparone
sedation
butyrophenone- ONLY TRANQUILER APPROVED FOR SWINE
Xylazine
Pigs are extremely resistant to xylazine; does not produce good sedation when used alone
Anticholingics
usually not given unless bradycardia warrants but ketamine(usually) and telazol(might) produce salivation, which makes visualizing larynx difficult
Benzos
sedation
tiletamine/zolazepam(telazol)
“super ketamine/ diazepam”; good sedation and muscle relaxor
TKX
telazol, ketamine, xylazine; more restraint anesthesia
opioids in pigs
not very good for adding sedation to other sedatives for premeds; fentanyl used for analgesia
Which vein does a catheter go in?
auricular
Why are pigs difficult to intubate?
hard to visualize the larynx
