The first attempt fails bc of Achans failure to respect harem at jerciho, taking a robe, silver and gold for himself. he and his family are put to death. In the second battle, the people are allowed to keep the cattle and other goods.

1) a levite sells his services to the highest bidder
2) a levite pushes his concubine out to a gang of men so he can get some sleep while they rape her, then he chops her into 12 pieces, and sends them to the other tribes, causing a civil war that almost wipe out the true of benjamin and leads to even more violence against women: kidnapping 400 young women so that the male survivor of benjamin can have wives.

in those days there was no king of israel, each person did what they thought was right. (because there is no king, the people are going wild. They need a king to bring them under control, and not even the lord is the king of israel any more).
