Test 2. mental health consultation model Flashcards
What is the mental health consultation model definition?
This model stresses intrapsychic feelings and their effects on interpersonal relationships. It differs from the behavioral model also in that it focuses on the consultee rather than the client, with the main goal to increase the capacity of the consultee.
It is the process where a mental health professional interacts with the consultee and assists with the mental health aspects of a work-related problem concerning a client or program
What are the key concepts of the mental health consultation model?
- The relationship between consultant and consultee is equal, not supervisory
- Caplan’s original model used a psychodynamic approach to consultation
- Uses transfer of effect (what is learned in one situation should be usable in similar future situations)
- It stresses intrapsychic feelings and their effects on interpersonal relationships
- The relationship between the consultant and the consultee is coordinate and non-hierarchical: the relationship should have equal status and power, and both parties must provide and accept information.
- Consultation is usually conducted as a short series of interviews: usually a series of 2 to 5 meetings is involved via phone and/or email conversations
- The consultant does not get involved in the personal problems of the consultee: if personal problems impedes the consultation process, referral for another source of counseling is suggested.
- A long-term goal of all consultation is to improve the on-the-job functioning of the consultee: the consultant attempts to transfer skills, knowledge, confidence and a sense of objectivity to the consultee.
- The Caplans intend their model to be used primarily for mental health problems
What are the processes/stages of the mental health consultation model?
- The consultant arrives at the consultee’s institution from the outside, they must be accepted.
- A short series of interviews/meetings (2-5)
- It continues indefinitely. As consultees increase in competence, it improves the likelihood that they will recognize mental health complications and ask for consultation
What are the current approaches/types of the mental health consultation model?
- Client-centered case consultation
- Consultee-centered case consultation
- Program-centered administrative consultation
- Consultee-centered administrative consultation
