Test 2: Awareness Flashcards
Awareness =
Consciousness (awareness requires attention)
Change Blindness
not noticing a (blatant) change in the environment
Inattentional Blindness
Looking at something and not seeing it (hidden in plain sight)
Fusiform Face Area
Detects faces and things that look like faces
Parahippocampal Place Area
Identifies Objects (what they are)
Top three parts needed for Awareness
- Lateral Prefrontal Cortex
- Parietal Cortex
- Higher Temporal Lobe Areas
Parietal Cortex
Makes Predictions and Judgements
Extinction
when stimuli in the right and left visual hemisphere fight for attention (one always wins)
Anosognosia
When a person has a disability but doesn’t know it
Somatoparaphrenia
Believing a body part belongs to someone else (that’s not my hand!)
Synchronization
Allows billions of neurons to more efficiently assemble themselves into functional patterns of activity or information states
Unconsciousness
Coma and Vegetative States
Coma
brain metabolism is 50% less than normal
Vegetative State
awake but not aware, low level sensory areas continue to respond to stimuli
Coma patients usually damaged one of these two areas
Midbrain and Thalamus
