Shi Gao***(sher Gao)Gypsum) mineral
Sweet, acrid, very cold,
Channels: Lung, Stomach
1 herb to treat 4 bigs ( pulse sweat, fever, thirst)
- clears heat, drains fire (combines with Zhi Mu) to help fever
- clears heat from excess, from Lungs (combines with Ma Huang)
- clears blazing stomach fire
- for eczema, burns, ulcerated sores
Cautions: be careful if people have cold s/s, this herb is very cold
Dose: 15-60g (average 30-60g) powders used now a days, so can use less b/c its concentratedIii
Zhi Mu*** (Cher Mu) bitter, Sweet, cold
Channels: Lung, Stomach, Kidney * (remember channels)
- Clears Lung and Lung Heat
- Very good for treating Kidneys
- Combines with Shi Gao to treat high fever
- Good for Lung heat (cough in Lung)w/ thick yellow sputum
- Moistens Dryness
- Clears Deficient Heat,…..Nourishes Yin
- Stops thirst, …..Generates fluids
- Good for people with constipation, but be careful if have diarrhea.
Zhi Zi***Very Bitter, very cold
Channels: Heart, Lung, Stomach, Liver, triple burner
- Do not use too long, just 3 days or when Sx go away.
- This herb does everything but clear heat from deficiency
- Drains heat. ELIMINATES IRRITABILITY
- (Person feels pressure on chest)
- Combo Zhi Zi and Dan Dou Chi good for Irritability
*Good for Liver/GB Damp Heat, Sx Fever, Jaundice, Painful Urination,
(Combine with Yin Chen Hao to clear Liver and GB Damp Heat)
- Cools Blood, resolves Toxicity….(goes to 2 levels, blood and Qi level)
- Yin Chen Hao and Zhi Zi #1 for Jaundice
- Zhi Zi combo with Mu Dan Pi to Drain Heat
- Contraindicated from cold from SP or ST
Dan Zhu Ye***(Sweet, Bland Cold) bamboo leaves
Channels: Heart, Small Intestine, Stomach
- Clears heat, eliminates IRRITABILITY…to do with Heart.
- Promotes Urination, clears damp heat.
- if burning tongue, red tip, (Lin Syndrome)use this Herb…
- Not a harsh Herb.
- Clears Heart Heat
Xia Ku Cao***(Summer Grass dying) Bitter, Acrid, Cold
Channels: Gallbladder, Liver
- Clears Liver fire…..Brightens eyes…..Cools Liver Fire
- for Hypertension (d/t LV Yang Rising)
- Benefits eyes….(Eyes are Red if LV Fire Rising)
- Clears Heat, dissipates nodules (Dissolves phlegm and
Cancer nodules) - not too bitter, good for Sx that are not so severe…
Tian Hua Fen***(Tian Quaa Fehn) Sky Flower Power (Root)
Channels: Lung, Stomach
Properties: bitter, slightly sweet cold

- Moistens lung dryness
- Drains Heat…..Generates Fluids
- Important Herb to treat Wasting Disorder
( people feel thirsty all the time ….have dry mouth)(This Herb relieves Thirst!!) - Clears and drains Lung Heat, Transforms Phelgm,
Moistens lungs - Use for sticky Phelgm and coughing blood
- Resolves toxicity, ….expels pus
- Clears lung heat without damaging lung
- Can be used internally and externally
- Could Abort Pregnancy if injected into muscles
- Can be used for nodules, carbuncles, skin inflammation
Lu Gen*** (root) Sweet, Cold (can use fresh and stems)
Channels Entered: Lung, Stomach
- Stops Nausea (Tian Hua Fen does not)
- Moistening also
- Clears heat same as Tian Hua Fen, but, Lu Gen Generate Fluids
- Use if High Fever
- is a helping Herb, Relieves Thirst, clears lung Heat
- Use for Wasting Disorder too….but use Tian Hua Fen more often.
- Promotes Urination
Lian Zi Xin** (Heart of Lotus) Bitter, Cold
Channels: Heart Pericardium
- Drains Heart Fire
- Chinese saying” Treat Organ with Organ” (treat heart with heart)
- Clears Heat from Heart and Pericardium
Jue Ming Zi** (Bright Seed) Bitter, Sweet, Salty, Slightly Cold
Channels: Liver, Large Intestine, kidney
- Clears Liver and eyes
- Good for eye problems …..from LV stagnation, LV Yang Rising
- Good for HTN
- Calms Liver, anchors errant yang
- Disperses wind-fire to cool the eyes
- Moistens the intestines, unblocks bowels (good for constipation)
(not good for diarrhea)( good Herb to loose wt) - Nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin with both ascending and
Descending action - Can use for irritability and bad temper
- Recently used to prevent atherosclerosis, it lowers both blood
Pressure and cholesterol - Compare with Xia Ku Cao
Qing Xaing Zi * Sweet, Slightly cold, Liver channel
Mi Meng Hua* Sweet, Slightly Cool, Liver channel
Gu Jing Cao* Sweet, Neutral, Liver, Stomach channel
(All 3 Benefit the Eyes)
- Clears wind Heat, drains liver Fire, Benefits Eyes
- used for HTN assoc with Liver Yang
- Clears Liver, benefits eyes, reduces supervision obstruction
- Tonifies Liver Yin, cools liver heat.
- Lightwt, clearing by nature, disperses wind heat in eyes and head
- Brightens eyes, eliminates superficial visual obstruction

Nourish Yin (good for Yin Deficiency)
Shui Niu Jiao***(Water Buffalo Horn) Salty, Cold
Channels: Heart, Liver, Stomach
- Not a common Herb b/c of animal parts
- Clears Heat, Cools Blood, Relieves Fire Toxicity
- Resolves toxic rashes, sores, stops bleeding
- Arrests Tumors
- Good for Pediatric fever
- Good for high Fever and delerium, (but not used often)
Sheng Di Huang***(Raw Yellow Herb) Sweet, Bitter, Cold
Channels: Heart, Liver, Kidney
- Clears Heat, Cools Blood. Nourishes Yin
- Tonifies, Clears Nutritive Level
- Generates Fluids
- with Shui Niu Jiao, (clears heat, cools blood)
- With Mu Dan Pi, (treats Blood Heat)
- With Mu Tong, Dan Zhu Ye ( clears heart heat)(Helps stop bleeding)
- Can cause loose stools ( be careful giving to people with diarrhea )
Xuan Shen ***(Shuen Shen) Black, family of ginseng
Mutual antagonist with Li Lu (Yuan Shen, another name)
Properties: Salty, Sweet, Bitter, Cold
Channels: Kidney, Lung, Stomach
- Assisting Herb (Nutritive Level)
- Clears Heat, Cools Blood,
- Nourishes Yin, relieves Toxins
- Softens Hardness, dissipates nodules (for lymph and cancer)
- Good for Throat and Throat pain d/t heat
- Use if fever, irritability, and throat pain

Salty and Cold
Softens hardness and moistens dryness
Mu Dan Pi***(Bark of Peony) Acrid, Bitter, Slightly Cold
Channels: heart, Liver, Kidney
- Commonly used Herb (not very harsh) moderate Herb
- not usually chief
- Clears Heat on Blood Level, cools the blood w/ Chi Shao
- help nosebleeds, menstruation blood
- Used a lot in GYN issues, in yin def patterns, (steaming bone
disorder, Night sweats - Clears fire from deficiency
- Invigorates Blood, dispels, blood stasis w/ Gui Zhi, Fu Ling, Chi
- Clears ascending Liver fire with Zhi Zi
- Drains pus and reduces swelling, esp good for Abscess
Appendicitis … - Very good to move blood and dispel stasis
Zi Cao** ( purple grass) Sweet, cold
Channels: Heart, Liver
- Bad smell
- not a commonly used herb, but does work well
- clears heat, cools blood, resolves fire toxicity while venting rashes.
- clears damp heat from skin
Huang Qin*** (Yellow Plant) Bitter, Cold (remember)
Channels: Lung, Stomach, Gallbladder, Large Intestine
(Used for upper burner)
- First of 3 yellows, used the most
- Clears heat, dries dampness (general for this section)
- combo with Huang Lian for damp heat in Large Intestine
- combo with Chai Hu clears lung heat
- Clears heat, stops bleeding (blood in stool)
- Clears heat, calms fetus (special action for this Herb) can use
during pregnancy - Sedates Ascendant Liver yang (not strong action)
( good for heat and bitter mouth)
*Do not use long, could damage spleen and stomach
Huang Lian*** ( 2nd Yellow…middle burner) very bitter, cold
Channels: Heart, Large Intestine, Liver, Stomach
- Start with small dose B/c so bitter
- Very Good for diarrhea and dampness
- Esp good for stomach and intestines
- Combo with Ge Gen, Huang Qin for diarrhea.
- Clears heat, drains dampness
- Drains fire toxicity
- both Huang Qin and Huang Lian are bitter, be careful of stomach
and Spleen, don’t take too long. - Clears heat, stops bleeding.
- Can be used topically for carbuncles, tooth pain, rinse with Herb
For toothache
Huang Bai***( third yellow for lower burner) bitter, cold
Channels: kidney, bladder
- only Herb of the 3 yellows that goes to the kidneys
- Drains damp heat, esp from lower burner (good for gout)
- Combo with Cang Zhu to drain heat in lower burner
- Drains Kidney fire with Zhi Mu
- drains fire, resolves fire toxicity
- Use 3 yellows together to treat fire toxicity
