Test 2/23/13 part 1 Flashcards
What does the Nervous System do?
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM INFORMS US OF CHANGES IN OUR ENVIRONMENT AND COORDINATES OUR RESPONSE TO THESE CHANGES.
define stimulus
ANY CHANGE IN THE ENVIRONMENT
define reaction
HOW WE REACT TO A CHANGE IN THE ENVIRONMENT
see diagram for neuron

Describe how a neuron’s structure seems perfect for its function of transmitting messages
ITS LONG AXON IS PERFECT FOR SENDING MESSAGES.
Think of a real-life analogy about communication for a neuron (and its parts) and how its structure is so well suited to its function.
IT’S LIKE A TELEPHONE WIRE
What does a sensory neuron do?
SENSORY NEURONS TAKE MESSAGES FROM ENVIRONMENT, BECAUSE OF STIMULI, TO SPINAL CORD OR BRAIN
What does a connecting neuron do?
MESSAGES GOING TO AND FROM BRAIN AND WITHIN BRAIN ARE CARRIES BY CONNECTING NEURONS
What does a motor neuron do?
CARRY MESSAGES FROM BRAIN OR SPIANL CORD TO MUSCLES OR GLANDS (JUST MUSCLES IS OK)
In order name the parts of a neuron through which a signal travels
DENDRITE, CELL BODY, AXON, AXON TIPS
What is a synapse?
SPACE BETWEEN TWO NEURONS
How does a signal go across a synapse?
A NEUROTRANSMITTER CARRIES IT FROM THE AXON TIPS OF ONE NEURON TO THE DENDRITES OF ANOTHER
What is a neurotransmitter?
THE CHEMICAL SENT OUT BY AXON TIPS TO CARRY A MESSAGE TO THE NEXT NEURON
Name the two parts of the peripheral division of the nervous system
a) motor and sensory nerves
b) autonomic
Name the two parts of the central division of the nervous system
a) brain
b) spinal cord
