Test 1: History Flashcards
False Dichotomies
Mind vs Brain
Psychological vs Biological
Genetic vs Environmental
Hippocrates
“The brain is the most powerful organ in the human body”
Aristotle
Brain acted as a radiator to cool blood
Galen
Saw sensory organs were connected to brain
Descartes
- Human body was a machine
- Reflexes were bodily movements that were automatic
- Mind and brain were separate; interacted at the pineal body
Golgi
Developed a silver chromate stain
Cajal
- Determined there were different kinds of neurons with specialized functions
- Developed neuron doctrine: N is basic signaling unit. Info travels from dendrites–>soma–> axon
Aggregate Field Theory
Theory on the organization of the brain:
- Not localized to specific parts of brain
- Mental functions are functions of the whole nervous system
Localization of Function
Theory on the organization of the brain:
Mental functions can be localized to certain areas of the brain
Broca’s aphasia
Aka expressive aphasia. Cannot produce speech but can understand speech
Broca’s area is located in the region of the frontal cortex on the left side
Wernicke’s Aphasia
Trouble understanding language but can produce speech (does not make sense)
Wernicke’s area is in the region of the temporal cortex on the left side of the brain
Lashley determined that it was how much of the brain was taken that determined function, not place. What about this?
- The NS is not only serial processing but also parallel processing
- Alternate paths in the NS can be used if the main one is damaged
- A complex maze uses many different regions of the brain and therefore deficits are not always noticed with selective lesions of the brain
