Voluntary vs captive audience
Captive audience has to be persuaded to take interest in your speech. Assume audience is captive unless sure of otherwise.

Listeners’ “self-interest”
When someone stands to gain or lose after policy/action takes affect.
Listeners’ “personal interest”
What an individual regards as interesting or important.
Selective exposure
Exposing yourself to messages that are personally important and already reinforce what be believe.
Selective attention
The conscious or unconscious choice on whether or not to focus on a speech or parts of that speech.

- Market research
- Focus groups

Informal methods of audience analysis
- Demographics
- Talking to other speakers on of the same subject.
- Talking to a host, moderator, or teacher
Ethos
Persuade by your character, the CREDIBILITY the audience has for you.
Logos
Persuading by the use of reasoning and LOGIC.
Pathos
Persuading by appealing to the reader’s EMOTIONS.
How does a speakers “ethos” influences the audience?
You want to know how your audience regards your credibility.
How to improve “ethos”
Have a realistic view on how audience members will regard you in regards to credibility.
