(Test 1: 2.) Introduction to Physical Exam at Instruments Flashcards
What two issues with the size of a blood pressure cuff will give a falsely high blood pressure reading?
A cuff that is too large on a large arm
or cuff that is too small on a normal arm.
What are the appropriate dimensions for a blood pressure cuff?
The length of the cuff’s bladder should be at least 80% of the circumference of the patient’s arm
The width of the cuffs bladder should be at least 40% of the length of the arm.
What two errors in taking blood pressure will result in a falsely low blood pressure reading?
Holding the brachial artery above the heart,
using a cuff that is too large on a small arm.
When should a provider wash their hands?
When hands are visibly dirty
after using the toilet
when exposed to potential spore forming pathogens (C.Diff)
When do we use the ophthalmoscope’s red free light?
When we are trying to visualize vessels and / or hemorrhages (improves contrast and makes the retina look black-and-white)
What is an ausculatory gap?
How is it documented?
A gap between the systolic and diastolic pressure readings.
Reported as systolic over diastolic within ausculatory gap from (beginning of the gap) – (end of the gap)
When should you wear disposable gloves?
Gloves should be worn if there is obvious blood or body fluid
(Be sure to wash your hands before and after wearing gloves)
