What is adherence?
- A person’s ability and willingness to follow recommended health practices
- The extent to which a person’s behavior (in terms of taking meds, following diets, or executing lifestyle changes coincides with medical or health advice
– Eating properly, Sufficient exercise, Adequate sleep, Avoiding stress, Abstaining from alcohol and nicotine, Keeping medical and dental appts., Using seatbelts
What are the barriers to adherence?
- Cost
- Patents see the regimen as being too difficult or time-consuming
- Patients teat regimen as advice rather than “orders”
- Patients stop taking medications when symptoms disappear
What factors predict adherence?
- The patient’s perception of the severity of the disease
- Treatment-characteristics - side effects of meds and complexity of treatment
- Personal characteristics - age, gender, personality patterns, emotional factors
