Two or more persons using the threat of violence to influence an audience in order to gain a political objective, or draw attention to their cause.

- Oppression leads to building support.

Repression breeds terrorism and terrorism provokes more repression.

What is international terrorism?
Terrorism that is practiced in a country by terrorists who are NOT native to that country.
What is domestic terrorism?
Terrorism practiced by those who operate in their native country, against their own people.

What are the characteristics of a nationalist terrorist group?
- Seek to form a separate state or overturn the government
- Among the most successful at winning sympathy and concessions
- Tend to calibrate use of violence
- Difficult to define
What are the characteristics of a religious terrorist group?
- Constitute nearly half of the 56 known international terrorist groups
- They use violence to further ‘divinely commanded purposes’
- Often target broad categories of enemies.
What is Narco-terrorism?
Terrorism conducted to further the aims of drug traffickers.

The deliberate use of terrorism by radical states as a foreign policy tool.

The United States because they consider the U.S. as the Great Satan due to the following:

- Disrespect of women

- Dominates airwaves (movies, music and other media)

Radical Islamic militant groups because:
- Demonstrated willingness to target a civilian population
- Extreme fanaticism
- Anyone not of their belief system is an acceptable/potential target

Bombs and other improvised explosive devices because:
- Cheap
- Efficient
- Spectacular
