Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS) Flashcards
The 7 modes of TAWS
1 Excessive decent rate
2 Excessive terrain closure rate
3 Altitude loss after takeoff or go-around
4 Unsafe terrain clearance when not in a landing configuration
5 Descent below glideslope (deviation alert)
6 Callouts
7 Windshear detection and alerting
Databases used to support the various modes. 2
1 Terrain/obstacle awareness alerting & display (TAAD)
2 Terrain clearance floor (TCF)
Mode 1
Active when the aircraft is less than 2,500 feet AGL. Requires radio altitude and rate of descent data. “SINKRATE” “PULL UP”
Mode 2A
Flaps are not in the landing position and the aircraft is not in the Glide Slope (GS) beam. “TERRAIN TERRAIN”. Penetration of the warning area will display PULL UP on the PFDs, and generate an aural “PULL UP” warning.
Mode 2B
Flaps in the landing configuration, or in the event the flaps are up and the airplane is on an ILS approach and the glideslope and localizer deviations are less than ±2 dots and for 60 seconds after takeoff. Penetration of the alert area will display GND PROX on the PFDs, and enable an aural “TERRAIN TERRAIN”. Further penetration will garner a “PULL UP”.
Mode 4 has how may modes.
Three modes. A,B,C
Terrain/Obstacle Awareness Caution Alert is typically given how many seconds ahead? “CAUTION TERRAIN” or “CAUTION OBSTACLE”. Then the added “PULL UP”. How many seconds ahead?
