Terrain Adaptation Skills Flashcards
What are the goals of Terrain Adaptation?
To maintain confidence, control, fluidity, and balance required for safely negotiating rougher, undulating terrain, and features found on un-groomed trails.
What terrain is used for Terrain Adaptation?
- Un-groomed runs.
- Blue runs with small rollers, small bumps, berms and banks.
- BX tracks, half-pipes, Terrain parks (easier, flatter sections).
What are the skills required for Terrain Adaptation?
1) Position & Balance: Relaxed, athletic position, with COM slightly lower than normal, for stability.
2) Pivot: Turning the snowboard using hip, knees, ankles and feet.
3) Edging: Balanced over the working edge using a combination of inclination and angulation movements.
4) Pressure: Allowing the lower body to move freely, absorbing pressure from terrain.
5) Timing & Coordination: Looking ahead, appropriate pace of movements, coordination skills.
What are the 3 skills that the student will need to - adapt to terrain?
1) Position and Balance
2) Pressure
3) Timing & Coordination
Suggested tactics for terrain adaptation - position and balance
Balance-specific tactics, in undulating or un-groomed terrain
Suggested tactics for terrain adaptation skill - Pressure
1) Static Flexion Exercise (Shock absorbers)
2) Traverse rolling/un-even terrain
3) Push/pull over rolling terrain
Suggested tactics for terrain adaptation, Skill - Timing & coordination
1) Changing Edges at top of bumps/rollers
2) Changing Edges at bottom of bumps/rollers
Suggested tactics for Terrain Adaptation:
1) Any stance specific exercises in undulating terrain.
2) Any flexion/extension and absorbing exercises - traverse through bumps with absorption.
3) Riding over small bumps and hollows.
4) Turning in the troughs of bumps.
5) Riding through BX course / banked turns and berms.
6) Pumping rollers.
7) Banking turns through half-pipe.
8) Dropping-in to a small half-pipe.
