Developing Carved Turns Flashcards
What are the goals for developing carving?
1) To develop edge angle until carving occurs, utilising the lower joints.
2) To maintain a centred position over both feet, with weight distributed evenly.
3) To develop a better sense of balance on a pure carved edge.
4) To link symmetrical carved turns on green slopes.
What terrain should be used for developing carving?
Green runs: beginning with flatter green runs and progressing to slightly steeper groomed conditions (still green), which allows for adequate speed control.
What are the skills needed to develop carving?
1) Position & Balanced: Equal weight over both feet. Relaxed position that allows for adjustment in balance.
2) Pivot: Minimal pivoting movements, to reduce sliding of the tail of the board.
3) Edging: Balance over a “pure” carved edge.
4) Timing & Coordination: Rhythm and symmetry.
What tactics can be used when teaching carved turns (Position & Balanced)?
1) Carved Traverse
2) hopping in traverse
What tactics can be used when teaching carved turns (Pivot)?
1) Arms restricted (crossed, on hips, etc)
2) Reduce rotational movements in body to maximise carve
What tactics can be used when teaching carved turns (Edging)?
1) stop n’ hops
2) drinks on shoulders analogy
What tactics can be used when teaching carved turns (Pressure)?
1) Cowboy knees
2) Carved traverse with vertical movement
What tactics can be used when teaching carved turns (Timing & Coordination)?
1) Counting
2) Follow the leader
3) sequence of movements
