Terms & Questions | Chap 1. Atoms & Mocules Flashcards
Ending chapter Terms and Questions
Atom
Basic unit of matter with a nuclues composed of Protons,Neutrons and orbiting Electrons.
Atomic Mass
Also called Atomic weight is the number of Protons and Neutrons in an Atom.
Atomic Number
The number of Protons in an Atom.
Covalent Bonds
The sharing of electrons by atoms through a chemical bond. This process usually forms to resembe a Noble Gas, as they have stable Electron Shells.
Electron
Negatively charged particle that orbits the the Nucleus of an Atom at the speed of light.
Elements
Building block of matter that cannot be broken down to any simpler substances. Elements are made of that Element’s Atom. etc. Au/Gold are made of gold atoms.
Energy
Capacity/Ability to do work or cause change.
Glucose
A simple sugar mixture with a molecular formula of 6C12H6O.
Hydrogen Bonds
Weak electrical bonds between the positive and negative ends of molecules, that together in large qunatity result in a three-dimensional shape that can hold molecules together.
Ions
Electrically charged particles formed when and Atom gains or loses Electrons. Ions are neutrally charged having the same amount of Electrons and Protons.
Ionic Bond
Chemical bond formed between two Atoms, where one donates an electron. This process creates positively and negatively charged Ions.
Isotopes
Elements that have the same Atomic Number (same amount of protons) but contrast in Atomic Mass, due to differing number of Neutrons.
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space.
Molecules
Compounds in which elements are in definite, fixed ratios. Due to either a covalent or ionic bond.
Neutron
A neutrally charged particle, located inside the nucleus. Variability of neutrons within elements that have the same protons are termed isotopes.
