What clause had caused a lot of bitterness?
‘War Guilt’ clause/Article 231
What did Article 231 force the Germans to do?
It forced them to accept all the blame for starting the war and it morally condemned their actions.
What did this article provide?
It provided legal reason for punishing the German people in the peace settlement. It justified the Allies’s demands for reparations from Germany.
What did the Allies agree?
They agreed that Germany had to pay for the damage caused by the war.
What was the reparation payment set at?
£6,600 million in 1921. It was paid off in installments
What did Germany fear from the payments?
That it would cripple them and they did not accept the reparations.
What happened to Alsace-Lorraine?
It was returned to France after it was taken during the Franco-Prussian war. It made France more secure from a possible attack. This led to the loss of Germany’s iron production.
What happened to Eupen and Malmedy?
It went to Belgium after plebiscites.
What happened to North Schleswig?
It went to Denmark after a plebiscite.
What was set up in Poland?
An independent state was set up. Poland was given West Prussia, Posen and part of Upper Silesia from Germany.
What happened to the rich coal mining area of the Saar?
It was under the control of the League of Nations and France controlled the coalfields.
What was the army limited to?
100,000 men
What happened to the navy?
It only had 6 battleships and 15,000 men
What happened to the army?
1) conscription was banned
2) they weren’t allowed tanks, submarines or military aircraft.
3) Rhineland became demilitarised
What happened to the Rhineland?
It became demilitarised. No German troops or weapons allowed in the 30-mile strip of land on the east bank of the River Rhine. It was occupied by Allied troops for 15 years. Stayed till 1930.
