When was the Beer Hall Putsch?
November 1923
What was Hitler’s aim?
To seize power.
What happened on the 8th November?
Hitler burst into a Munich Beer Hall with the intention of winning over Ritter von Kahr and Otto von Lossow. The leaders were held at gunpoint and were convinced to agree to the plan and install Ludendorff as new Commander-in-Chief.
What happened between the rebels and the police?
There was a gun battle with the police which later became past of the myth of the ‘brave’ Nazis who marched fearlessly.
What happened to Hitler?
He had dislocated his shoulder and fled. But he was soon captured and arrested for 5 years but only served 9 months.
Who was Hitler inspired by?
He was inspired by Mussolini, who marched on the streets of Rome and overtook the gvt. Mussolini called his soldiers ‘blackshirts’ due to the colour of their uniform so Hitler called his soldiers ‘brownshirts’.
How serious was the threat?
The Nazis themselves were not a threat due to the size of the group. They were easily put down and the putsch was poorly planned with minimal support.
What was serious about the threat??
That a war hero like Ludendorff was willing to affiliate himself with an ex-soldier like Hitler was worrying for the gvt and the public.
