TERMS NEED TO KNOW ** Flashcards
Define Chromosome
DNA is foiled tightly around proteins to condense and form chromosomes.
Humans have a copy of all 23 pairs of chromosomes in each of their cells
Gene
A section of DNA that codes for a particular protein.
Allele
Alternate versions of a gene
Genotype
The alleles that an individual has in their DNA
Phenotype
A persons observable traits
Dominant
When only one allele is required for the trait to be expressed in the phenotype
Recessive
When both alleles are required for the trait to be expressed in the phenotype
Homozygous
To remember: Homo = one = one type of letter
When an individual has two copies of the same allele for a particular gene, either homozygous dominant or homozygous recessive.
Heterozygous
When an individual contains two different alleles for a particular gene.
