Cells Flashcards
What are cells?
The smallest units of living things
What is unicellular? Give Examples.
life forms that consist of only one cell e.g. bacteria
What is multicellular? Give Examples.
life forms that are made up of many cells e.g. humans, animals, plants
Cell Theory
- All living things are composed of one or more cells.
- The cell is the smallest form of life.
- All cells come from pre-existing cells, via cell division.
What does the basic structure of all cells contain?
- Cell Membrane
- Cytoplasm
- DNA
What is a Cell Membrane?
it acts like the ‘skin’, forming a barriers around the cell and controlling the entry and exit of wastes and nutrients.
What is Cytoplasm?
the jelly-like fluid inside the cell membrane
What is DNA?
the genetic information that contains instructions for making the proteins you body needs to keep you alive
What are the 2 types of cells
Eukaryotic Cells & Prokaryotic Cells
Eukaryotic Cells
- More complex, evolved from prokaryotes.
- Membrane bound organelles
- Contain a nucleus
- Usually multi-cellular
- They can be found in plants, animals and fungi.
Prokaryotic Cells
- Ancient
- No membrane bound
- No nucleus
- Unicellular
- E.g. bacteria and archaea
What is the nucleus? What does it contain?
- Control centre/dictator of the cell
- Contains DNA
- Usually, one per cell
