Prezworski: That economic development doesn’t cause democratization, but can prevent it from breaking down.
Boix and Stokes: Economic Development directly influences democratization.
How does wealth create democracy?
The more wealthy a nation, the more happy the people (Luxembourg/Belgium), therefore democracy will more firmly ensconce itself.
How does being a British colony create democracy?
Britain would have installed democratic ideals in the people, carried over from its own system back in London (Canada, India, Australia).
How does education create democracy?
When people are economically and politically educated, they are more likely to reject other forms of inefficient political systems (France, US, UK).
How does capital mobility create democracy?
If human capital can transfer from one industry to a next, it heightens the chance of remaining employed, creating content sentiments towards democracy.
How does an intense recession reduce the spread of democracy?
People who are the losers of the economic system and experience much recession, may elect authoritarian, ISI-inclined leaders (Peru, Argentina).
How does being the neighbor of a democratic country create democracy?
Because democratic ideals are spread across close borders (Canada & USA; UK & Ireland)
How is democracy created when economic sanctions don’t matter?
Because the country is less likely to experience a buckle in its economy if sanctions do not effect its economy and work-force (USA, UK.)
How is democracy created when there is a colony that is treated undemocratically by an imperial power?
Because the colony will strive for fairness and freedom - what they didn’t have under oppression (India, Ireland.)
