Terms #7 Flashcards
Gene Regulation
Used to control the timing, location, and amount of gene is expressed
Operon
Neighboring genes in a genome and are transcribed together into a single mRNA
Operator
Located in operon that is a binding site for repressor
Repressor
Protein that prevents expression of one or more genes
Corepressor
Regulates gene expression by binding to repressor (times off gene expression)
Inducer
Binds to repressor (turns on gene expression)
Activator
Protein that increases the production of a gene product
Differential gene expression
Different genes are expressed in a cell and give cell a specific purpose
Transformation
Foreign material is taken up by a cell
Transduction
Virus transfers genetic material from one cell to another
Conjugation
Through direct contact, bacterial cell transfers genetic material to another
Epigenetic inheritance
Change in gene expression (not DNA themselves) are passed down
Control elements
Binding sites for regulatory proteins, allowing for control of rate of gene expression
Enhancers
Increases transcription of gene, regulatory to boast gene expression
DNA methylation
Chemical modification, alter gene expression, DNA more accessible
