Ex post facto law
criminalizing an act already completed but not previously forbidden by the penal law
Natural law
A theory or philosophy of law often contrasted with positive law maintaining that there is a law that is either God given or one that flows from the evolved nature of Homo Sapiens
Positive law
Human-made law arising from social norms; contrasted with natural law
Rule of law
The principle that law, not men, govern and that no one is above the law
General definition of law
Rules of conduct applicable to all members of a community/culture, coming from a governing authority and which are enforced by its agents through penalties and other means of remedy for violation of the rule
Public Law
Area of law governing the state and relationships between the state and individuals
Private Law
Area of law governing relationships among persons
What is judicial review
The power of the courts to review acts of the government and acts of legislature
Explain deductive and inductive reasoning
In deductive reasoning, a general rule is applied to a specific case. In inductive reasoning, specific cases are used to find a general principle.
