Terminology Review Flashcards
What is a between subjects study?
Only the experimental group receives the intervention/IV, control group gets comparison condition or nothing to allow for comparison
What is a within subjects study?
All participants eventually receive the intervention
What is the independent variable?
The things that exerts the effect, implemented consistently
What is the dependent variable?
The thing we are measuring, interested in the change of this, the thing that we expect to matter
When is effect size reported?
For significant results
If nothing follows the p-value then it probably is not significant
What does the p-value indicate?
Serves as our alpha to test if something is significant
p-value equal to or less than 0.05 indicates significant results, anything that is greater indicates that the results were not significant
What does a p-value of 0.05 or less indicate?
We are 95% sure that the study results are not just due to chance
What is RCT the best study for?
Best study to determine causal relationship of an IV on one or more DVs
Testing effect of IV on DV, looking for effect or change on DV
Think experimental, causal relationship of IV on DV
What test is used when we are looking at the difference of something?
T test or ANOVA
What key words tell you that we would run a regression statistical test?
Predict, effect, impact, causally manipulate, improve, decrease
What key words in the research question indicate that we are looking at correlation?
Relationship, association
What is blinding? Double blinding?
When the researchers are blind to the research intent
Both the researchers and the participants are blinded to the study’s design and intent
