Terminology and Dosing Flashcards
Pharmacology
study of the effects of drugs on the function of living systems
Drug
a chemical substance of known structure that when administered to a living organism produces a biological effect
Pharmacokinetics
the study of absorption, distribution, metabolism, & elimination (what the body does to the drug)
Pharmacodynamics
what a drug does to the body
Over-the-counter drugs
drugs considered safe to use by a lay person
Prescription drug
drugs not considered safe to be used by a lay person and require a prescription; CAUTION: law restricts this drug use by or on order of a licensed veterinarian
Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) drugs
drugs that are approved for use in or on animal feed under the professional supervision of a licensed veterinarian
Dose
quantity of drug to be taken (e.g. mg/kg, mg/lb, ml/kg)
1 lb = ? g
454
Metric prefixes
kilo: 103 milli: 10-3 micro: 10-6
Percent weight-to-volume (%w/v)
of grams of a drug per 100 mls of a solution
Percent volume-to-volume (%v/v)
of mls of a drug per 100 mls of a solution
Percent weight-to-weight (%w/w)
of grams of a drug per 100 g of a solution
Drug dosing calculation
(Desired dose * weight of patient)/Concentration of drug
Extra-label drug use
drugs are FDA approved for human use but efficacy is untested in animals
What act covers extra-label drug use?
Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994
Relationship between Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics

Important equations
Amount of drug in a solution = drug concentration * solution volume
C1 x V1 = C2 x V2
C1 x V1 + C2 x V2 = CF x V(1 + 2)
