Terminology Flashcards
Define the term anoxia
The absence of oxygen in the tissues
Define the term anaesthesia
Insensitivity to pain as artificially induced by the administration of gases or the injection of drugs
Define the term analgesia
absence of sensitivity to pain, in particular the relief of pain without the loss of consciousness
Define the term analeptic
A drug that acts as a stimulant to the CNS
Define the term apnoea
Temporary cessation of breathing
Define the term arrhythmia
variation from normal rhythm
Define the term ataractic
pertaining to or characterised by ‘ataraxia’. This is an agent that induces ataraxia
Define the term agonist
a muscle that contracts to move a part is opposed by another muscle or is a drug that has an affinity for cellular receptors of another drug or natural substance that causes a physiological effect.
Define the term antagonist
muscle that counteracts the action of another muscle or a drug that binds to a cellular receptor
Define the term basal nacrosis
reversible state of CNS depression induced by a drug
Define term blood-brain barrier
A semi-permeable membrane separating the blood from the spinal fluid. Constitutes a barrier to the passage of cells, particles and large molecules.
Define the term bradycardia
slowness of the heartbeat
Define the term dead space
volume of a breath that doesn’t participate in gas exchange
Define the term hypercapnia
excess of carbon dioxide in the blood, indicated by an elevated PCO2 of determined by the blood gas analysis
Define the term hypertension
persistent elevated blood pressure
Define the term hypotension
diminished tension, lowered blood pressure
Define the term hypothermia
low body temperature
Define the term hypoventilation
reduction in the amount of air entering the pulmonary alveoli
Define the term hyponotic
Pertaining to or inducing hypnosis or sleep can also be an agent that induces sleep
Define the term hypoxia
diminished availability of oxygen to body tissues
Define the term minute volume
Volume of gas inhaled or exhaled from lungs in a minute
Define the term muscle relaxant
drug that affects skeletal muscle function and decreases muscle tone
Define the term neuroleptanalgesics
Suitbale combination of agents used to produce neuroleptanalgesia
Define the term premedication
Preliminary medication
