What is the aim of pre-anaesthesia?
To ensure efficient, safe and effective anaesthesia
Explain fasting
Withholding food the night before a procedure
Usually 6-8hrs but dependant on age, species etc
Reduces risk of vomiting, which reduces risk of breathing being restricted
Full stomach can put pressure on lungs
What are examples of history and exam questions?
Confirm ID Owner details breed, age, sex reproductive status vaccination status history of anaesthesia fasted? any meds and last dose recent health behaviour/ temperament health over last few months
What is involved in a pre-anaesthetic exam?
Must be thorough, basic TPR at minimum

CNS, CVS, respiratory hepatic, renal and haematological main concentration
Pre-neutering checks (checking for presence of both testes)
Record findings
What is involved in a consent form?
consent must be provided by owner ot someone authorised to sign on behalf
Must be informed consent
What needs to be on a consent form?
Name, address and telephone pet details Name and address of owner any relevant history Contact Telephone Details of procedure Owner or authorised person sign - over 18
What is the purpose of premeds?
Calm Patient Reduce anxiety Reduce amount of induction agents Reduce amount of maintenance agetns Provide analgesia
