Terminology Flashcards
Pathogen
A bacterium, virus or other microorganism that can cause disease
Vector
It transmits disease from one organism to another without getting infected
Parasite
An organism that lives in or on another organism (it’s host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the hosts expense
Prion
A non-cellular pathogen. They are abnormal and infectious proteins that can convert normal protein into prion protein
Virus
A non-cellular pathogen with consist of RNA or RNA enclosed in one or more coats of protein
Bacteria
A cellular pathogen. Some release toxins that can make you sick
Protozoan
A protein in a single called organism and is usually found within the hosts body. It is mostly found in tropic regions
Fungi
A parasite that lives on plants and animals including humans
Antigen
A toxin or other foreign substance that induces an immune response in the body, especially the production of anti-bodies
Lymphocytes
A form of white blood cell occurring especially in the lymphatic system
Immunity
The ability of an organism to resist a particular toxin or infection
Active immunity
You make your own antibodies to be immune
Passive immunity
You have antibodies which have been produced by another organism
Antibodies
A toxin of other foreign substance that is made form B- Lymphocytes when a foreign particle enters the body
Infectious Disease
A contagious disease and is caused by a pathogen
