Polysemes
Words that are the same but have different meanings e.g. Foot of a mountain or foot attached to leg
E.g. Feel and feel
Superordinate
An umbrella word .e.g fruit.
Capitonyms
March and march. Words that have different meanings but written the same except for one word’s being capitalised
Free morpheme
The smallest meaningful unit in a language. E.g. Bottle, fish, cat.
Bound morpheme
An individual inid that has meaning but must appear with another word e.g. Dis, un, in etc
Delexicalised words
Words without individual meaning - they need another word to be meaningful e.g. Do, get, have
Colligation
Lexical chunks that go with certain grammar. For example, ‘fuck off’ goes with the imperative.
Bi-nominals
Two words that appear in a particular order e.g. Black and white, to and fro.
Tri-nominals
Like bi-nominals, but in 3. E.g. Tall, dark and handsome
Hypernym
Words that can be categorised by a superordinate e.g. Crimson is a hypernym of red.
Top down processing
A technique whereby a learner applies their knowledge of the world to a text, which they can use to aid comprehension.
Bottom up processing
Where a learner uses their knowledge of how a language works e.g. Grammar, phonology, syntax to decode a text.
