Terminology Flashcards
Antecedent
A stimulus change that happens before a behavior.
doorbell ringing was an antecedent to the dog barking.
Three term contingency
Primary unit of analysis
ABC
Antecedent
behavior
consequence.
A.k.a. S-R-S (stimulus-response-stimulus)
Antecedent
A stimulus change that happens prior to the behavior
Antecedent intervention
Involves manipulating the environment prior to a target behavior occurring.
- Increases or decreases the likelihood of a behavior
Eg prior preparation of healthy food increases the likelihood of eating healthier
Automatic reinforcement
A type of reinforcement that does not require outside influence.
- The behavior itself automatically results in the outcome or consequence
Automaticity of reinforcement
Reinforcement that occurs without us being aware that it is occurring
- we don’t have to be aware our behavior is being reinforced for reinforcement to occur
Aversive stimulus
An unpleasant stimulus that decreases the likelihood of a behavior.
- Can be conditioned or unconditioned.
- touching a hot stove.
- verbal warnings or speeding tickets
Avoidance contingency
A response that postpones or prevents stimulus from occurring.
- child running away from the table to avoid a task
- Temper tantrum to avoid cleaning.
Accidental reinforcement
And unintentional strengthening of a behavior by inadvertent reinforcement
- A coincidental unintentional pairing of a stimulus and response that reinforces that response
