Diagnosis
identification of the disease, condition or injury based off of signs and symptoms
Etiology
cause of a disease or abnormal conditon
predisposing factors
things that put an individual at risk of developing a condition (i.e. genetics, lifestyle, enivorment, PSYCHOLOGICAL and CHEMICAL)
Prevention
action taken to decrease the chances of a disease or condition
acute
severe or sudden onset of a condition - short duration
Insidious
gradually and secretly causing harm (cancer, STD)
Chronic
- medical illness or condition that lasts for over 3 months
- typically cannot be cured
- i.e. autoimmune disease
subclinical
not detectable by the the normal clinical tests
i.e. diabetes or arthritis
Latent
hidden, invisible and INACTIVE. Shows no symptoms. Still could manifest at anytime.
i.e. Lymes Disease
Manifestations - 2 types
How it is displayed
local - affects a certain area (organ or body part)
systematic - affects the whole body (in the blood stream)
signs
indicators that lead to a diagnosis ( can be seen on a test or x-ray)
symptoms
subjective and physical feelings that can lead to a diagnosis
i.e. my vision is blurry, my knee hurts when I bend it
syndrome
a collection of signs and symptoms that affect one or more organs, that are caused by a certain condition
lesions
visible or microscopic changes to the tissue (small cut, blister, or internal tissue damage)
Remissions
a decrease or disappearance of symptoms
exacerbation
increase in the severity of a disease or its symptoms
precipitating factors
factors that triggered the onset of the problem
complications
an unfavorable result that can negatively effect the outcome of a disease or treatment
Contraindications
any reason, symptom or medical problem to not receive treatment or medical procedure
Relative Contraindications
caution should be used and is acceptable if benefits outweigh the risks
Absolute Contraindications
treatment could cause significant harm or death and should be avoided
convalescence
recovery time from illness, surgery or the treatment
Precautions
an action taken in advance to ensure the safety and well-being of yourself, patient and others
prognosis
a prediction of the patients medical outcome based on the nature and symptoms of the case/ diagnosis
morbidity
negative outcomes due to a treatment or disease
mortality
death ratio
expected deaths according to the actual deaths of a certain group of people
