Terminations Flashcards
What does terminating a shielded power cable mean?
To terminate the cable’s insulation shield (metallic shield and underlying semi-conducting layer)
It does not mean to end the cable itself.
What are the two common methods for dealing with shielded cable ends?
- Installation of terminations
- Separable connectors (elbows)
What is the purpose of preparing the cable by removing the shielding layers?
To contain the medium or high voltage electrical field
What can occur if the electrical field at the cut-back edge of the semi-conducting shield is too concentrated?
Partial discharge, or corona
What is the dielectric strength of air compared to that of cable insulation?
Air: 76 volts per mil; Cable insulation: approximately 800 volts per mil
What is the current industry standard for terminations?
IEEE Standard 48
What does the Class 1 Termination provide?
The best protection for the cable
How is the Class 2 Termination classified?
As a switchgear termination
What is the primary function of stress control in terminations?
To reduce the electrical stress concentrated at the edge of the cut-back semi-conducting shield
What are the two common methods for providing stress control?
- Stress cone
- Capacitive stress control material
What is the traditional method of stress control?
Stress cone
What advantage do capacitive methods of stress control provide?
Distribute voltage stresses over a larger area
What functions does a termination’s insulator provide?
- Tracking protection
- Basic lightning impulse insulation level (BIL) protection
What materials are preferred for the insulator to prevent tracking?
Inorganic materials, such as silicone rubber
What is a skirted insulator used for?
To contribute to the termination’s tracking resistance
What does BIL stand for?
Basic lightning impulse insulation level
What is required for a termination to qualify as a Class 1 Termination?
It must provide a seal to the external environment
What types of seals are used in terminations?
- Potting compound
- Tapes
- Cold shrink tubes
- Heat shrink seals
What should a termination provide regarding grounding?
An external ground connected to the cable shield at the base of the termination
What basic information is essential in the termination selection process?
- Cable type
- Voltage rating
- Conductor size
- Installation environment
- Other factors
What are termination installations referred to as?
Live-front connections
Name common types of terminations.
- Tape termination
- Cold shrink termination
- Heat shrink termination
- Push-on termination
- Pothead termination
One function that an IEEE Class 1 Termination provides is electrical stress control for the cable shield terminus.
True
An IEEE Class 1 Termination does not provide a seal to the external environment and must be sealed with two layers of tape.
False
