Term test 2 Flashcards
what does the right lymphatic duct drain
- right arm
- right side of the chest
- right side of the chest
what does the left lymphatic duct drain
everything BUT the:
- Right arm
- Right side of the chest
- right side of the head
what is edema
a local or general accumulation of fluid in the interstitial tissue spaces.
what are the early signs of lymphedema
- subtle fullness in the limb,
- a ring or shoe that is too tight,
- skin feels unusually warm,
- a reddish appearance to the skin,
- an infection slow to heal, joint pain, or reduced range of motion.
what should people with lymphedema avoid
anything that would traumatize the affected limb:
IE
- needle sticks,
- blood pressure cuffs,
- extreme temperatures
- weighted repetitive motion activities on the affected side
- Avoid straining the arm with heavy lifting.
how is lymphedema treated
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
steps to perform lymph drainage
1: elevate limb
2: encourage diaphragmatic breathing
3: ice limb
4: perform pimp on appropriate side of neck 5-7 times
5: pump shoulder or hip 5-7 times
6: do lymph drainage
7: reflex distal
8: GSM prox.
CI’S for MLD
- chronic congestive heart failure
- infections
- pitted edema
- recent thrombosis
how to do frictions
1: warm up tissue with effleurage
2: if long tendon: stretch. If short: relax
3: friction on Tendon for 30 sec
4: Drain + relax if long tendon, stretch if short
5: Repeat x3
CIs for frictions
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- On anti-inflamatories
What is O:I technique
T,s
Why would you need to use O:I technique
if the muscle belly is too sore to work on
how long should you apply cold hydrotherapy
- 10-15 minutes on + 10-15 off
- Or 10-15 minutes every hour
how long should you apply heat hydrotherapy
30 minutes MAX
what are the the CI’s for cold
front nip, boney areas, circulator issues, abdominal issues
what are the CI’s for heat
infections, burns, pregnancy, diabetes, heart insufficiencies, kidney disease
how to perform a vascular flush
Begin with predominate temperature (heat for chronic, cold for subacute) for a 3 minute application, follow with one minute of contrast temperature. Repeat 3 times, end treatment with application of cold.
CI’s for vascular flush
- decreased sensitivity to temperatures
-vascular pathologies
what are the uses and effects of vascular flush
use the effects of both heat and cold to create a vascular pump and thereby flushing an area of congestion or swelling
what are the uses of diaphragmatic breathing
- helps client relax and break the pain cycle
- gives the client control over uncomfortable techniques
- promotes lymph flow for lymph drainage techniques
what are the CI’s of diaphragmatic breathing
- long term diabetes
- kidney disease
what are the symptoms of stress
- fluid retention,
- hypertension,
- muscle weakness,
- osteoporosis,
- breakdown of connective tissue,
- peptic ulcers,
- impaired wound healing,
- vertigo,
- headaches,
- reduced ability to deal with stress,
- hypersensitivity,
- weight gain,
What are the uses of an ice massage
muscle that has recently gone into spasm (no visible swelling)
painful muscle tissue that is in a state of chronic spasm (no visible swelling)
often used at sporting events
flare-up of chronic inflammatory condition such as tendinitis (no visible swelling)
what are the CI’s for ice massage
- areas where normal sensation is compromised (neuropathy, frostbite)
- hypersensitivity to cold
- vascular dysfunction
NEVER WHERE THERE IS VISIBLE SWELLING
how long should you do ice massage for?
until they feel numbness. 10 minutes maximum
what are the stages of ice massage
CBAN
- Cold
- Burning
- Aching
- Numbness
what are the effects of jacobsons progressive relaxation
A contract–relax method which teaches client how to recognize tension
what are alpha nerve fibers
- transmits input from touch receptors, pressure receptors, muscle spindles, GTO’s, vibration sense, proprioception
- sense vibration / proprioception
what are delta nerve fibers
transmits input from pain receptors, temperature receptors
what are c-fibers
Transmits input form somatic and visceral pain receptors.
list the most sensitive to least sensitive nerves
Most Pain Sensitive: Periosteum, Cornea of eye, joint capsule
Moderately Sensitive: Subchondral bone, Tendons, Ligaments
Less Sensitive: Muscle, Cortical bone
Not Sensitive: Synovium, Articular cartilage, fibrocartilage ie. with cartilage erosion, synovitis or meniscal tears, pain is often “silent” until secondary tissue involvement occurs.
what is sclerotome pain
pain is “experienced” as originating from all of the tissues that are innervated by the same nerve, or along the sclerotome.
what is radicular pain
Pain is PROJECTED along course of nerve
what is blood pressure
the strength at which the heart pumps the blood
a BP of 115/75 is
normal
a BP of 100/60 is
low
a BP of 160/ 100 is
high
what is the definition of diastole
pressure between contractions
what is the definition of systole
pressure during contraction of the heart
what is hypotension
low blood pressure
what is hypertension
high blood pressure
what are the symptoms of left ventricular heart failure
labored breathing, noisy wet breathing, profuse sweating
what are the symptoms of right ventricular heart failure
edema distal to the heart, liver function
for pregnancy how must the client be positioned
side lying
what are the CI’s for pregnancy
Low back, abdomen, deep massage over varicose veins,
what are the CIs for cancer
P/T may not feel deep pressure, be aware of tissue fragility, massage as whole is CI’ed unless approved by clients oncologist, massage over known or suspected tumor sites
what are the effects of radiation on the skin
skin lesions, burns, tissue fragility
what type of skin conditions are CI’ed
warts, athletes foot,
what is the ABCDEF criteria
