Q

CASE STUDY

What were the Weston Super Mare Rejuvenation Strategies?

A

The New Grand Pier - When the pier reopened in 2010 after the fire in 2008, it attracted 52,000 visitors on opening day and an estimated 100,000 for the weekend. The week following the opening 300,000 visitors flocked to the attraction and 250,000 followed in the three weeks after.
T4 on the Beach - The UK’s most popular summer beach party returns to the tellybox as T4 On the Beach gets ready to rock for its ninth year. The local economy used to earn around £5 million a year because of T4 on the Beach every year since it began in 2005. The audience size is over 40,000.
Sand Sculptures - the sand sculpture in Weston have a festival that has been running for 11 years and brings in lots of tourists and money. Every year around 600,000 people visit to see the sand sculptures.

70
Q

CASE STUDY

What were the Weston Super Mare Rejuvenation Strategies?

A

Weston Observation Wheel
Weston Enduro Beach Race - since 1983 the amount of people taking part has increased from 500 to 1500. It has impacted the economy as £35 million has been raised since the race began and has made a difference socially by involving around 40 different nations alongside an audience of over 80,000 people. Environmentally the race has not made an impact as the sand used to form the track returns to how it usually is three days after the race has taken place.
Dolphin Square development (since 2012) - it will make it more than a seaside town which is dependent on seasonal trade. A cinema and restaurant has extended the trading hours of the town, and that is really important for the increased residential development.
Pirate Adventureland - Weston spent approx £750,000 yet has had a positive impact on its social attraction as it invites families and young children to visit the Adventureland for a reasonable price. It can be used for children’s birthday parties which further increases income. Aiming at younger children will uplift the community feel and attract higher numbers of tourists.

71
Q

CASE STUDY

Where is the Antarctica?

A

It’s in the lower hemi-sphere. The closest country is South America and then New Zealand/Australia.

72
Q

CASE STUDY

Describe the trend of tourists visiting Antarctica from 2007-2008. What were the reasons for this trend?

A

A third of visitors are from United States and has a total of 16,533. The least amount of people are from the Netherlands at 1,213. This is understandable as the United States is a lot bigger than a lot of countries and has a wider range of people in it. The UK has the second biggest total for tourists at 7,372 which is suprising as the UK is smaller.
The most popular tourist activities involve ship cruise (231,832) and small boat landing (218,856). This may be because Antarctica is know for wildlife and the ocean as well as ice bergs.

73
Q

CASE STUDY

What are the impacts on tourism on the Antarctica?

A

Fragile ecosystem with many vulnerable species. Tourists want to visit more picturesque and wildlife rich areas. Seals and penguins are at the forefront of this impact. Eggs and young have been known to be abandoned due to tourist contact.
In 2007 save M/V explorer carrying diesel, oil and gasoline hit an iceberg and sank. Surface oil slick covered 5km2 had severe impact on fragile ecosystem. The clear up involved chemical detergents. Birds, seals, fish and plant life were all affected.
With number of visitors predicted to double in next 10 years possible impacts include sea and coastal pollution, littering, damage to flora and fauna and disruption to breeding patterns (peak breeding and peak tourist seasons coincide). Probability looms of larger ships, helicoptors and commercial air strips. Already large cruise ships with up to 1,000 passengers sail to Antarctica.

74
Q

CASE STUDY

How is tourism being manage in Antarctica and is it sustainable?

A

Mass tourism created overcrowded and over familiar destinations, e.g. stagnation of weston Super Mare and Blackpool, UK).
Some people grown tired of relaxation holidays and want excitement on holiday. Improved infrastructure, i.e. growth of airlines, has opened up less familiar extreme environments.
Higher numbers of young, rich, single tourists with diverse tastes.
IAATO regulates tourism. Enforces strict guidelines to limit size of ships and passengers landing. In 2009 banned ships carrying 500+ passengers. In 2011 tourism fell to 25,000.
Many sites in Antarctica are now designated SSSIs. Bird Island is a SSSI that prohibits people.

75
Q

What is SSSI?

A

Sites of special scientific interest

76
Q

CASE STUDY

What is IAATO?

A

International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators

77
Q
