List the 5 main Japanese periods.

What were the main things that happened in the Heian Period?
Fujiwara Clan in power originally.
Shoen owners gain power, and then take over the country.
Japanese culture flourished while Chinese influence diminished.
Fujiwara Clan eventually lost control when Emperor Go-Sanjo employed Minamoto officials.
Eventually, the Minamoto and Taira fought to which the Taira originally won but then an uprising caused the Minamoto to regain control.
What were the main things that happened in the Kamakura Period?
Capital moved to Kamakura and the Kamakura Bafuku is created.
Shogun title created.
Mongols attempted to invade in 1274 and 1281.
What were the main things that happened in the Sengoku Period?
A dispute over whether the Emperor’s brother or his son should become Emperor.
This created the Onin war, where Ashikaga eventually came out on top.
First people from the West arrive.
Oda Nobunaga grew his province.
What were the main things that happened in the Edo Period?
Capital moved to Edo.
Japan in ‘sakoku’.
Only Dutch and Chinese ships were allowed to trade with Japan, and the Dutch were limited to a small island called Daijma in Nagasaki.
Christianity was banned.
Commodore Perry eventually visits and forces Japan to trade with the U.S.
The fact Japan was behind the West caused a civil uprising which dethroned the Tokugawa Shogunate and led to the restoration of the Emperor and a removal of the isolation measures.
